Argh! I had a busy weekend/end of week, and wasn’t able to post about all the cool stuff that suddenly happened. Let’s start with a biggie you’ve undoubtedly heard about - NASA has found a tenth planet in the solar system!
Check out this FAQ from one Mike Brown, one of the co-discoverers of the planet.
Pluto was the last planet discovered, and that was in 1930, so you might say that this is a pretty big deal.
The planet’s discoverers are calling the planet “Xena” amongst themselves.
Informally, the astronomers have been calling it “Xena” after the television series about a Greek warrior princess, which was popular when the astronomers began their systematic sweep of the sky in 2000. “Because we always wanted to name something Xena,” Brown said.
Thank goodness! If the astronomers were watching another TV network, we’d be calling the planet by a completely different name.

Ist es nicht toll das unser Forschergeist uns nie Müde werden läßt, neue Dinge zu entdecken? Ich bin begeistert und sehr gespannt, was uns der Weltraum noch so zu bieten hat.
