Beccy Tanner at The Wichita Eagle reported today that what may be the largest meteorite found in the U.S. may have been found in western Kansas!
Meteorite hunter and former Wichitan Steve Arnold found the 1,400 pound monster a few weeks ago in Kiowa county under 7 feet of earth.
“It is aesthetically the type of meteorite that makes collectors drool,” Arnold said. “It’s what a meteorite ought to look like. It’s going to make first-graders go ‘Wow!’ “
There are many meteorite hunters out there. As Abrams says, it takes a great deal of travel, and a lot of patience to find these extraterrestrial immigrants.
“I must have pulled up a hundred pounds of junk,” he said. “Wrenches, horseshoes, broken plows and wagon wheels.”
In fact, the previous record for the world’s largest Pallasite meteorite was found not too far from this current find. It currently resides in Greensberg, Kansas in the Celestial Museum of the World’s Largest Hand Dug Well - a great stop if you’re ever on highway 54!
Kansas is a prime locations to find meteorites in the U.S. It’s flat, and relatively clear of tress and development. One of the first impact craters ever found in the U.S. was discovered in Brenham, Kansas in the 1920s.
There is a small group here in Wichita that was recently started for Meteor enthusiasts. The Kansas Meteor Society was founded in 2003 as a place for meteorite hunters and enthusiasts to gather and share their experiences.

ou bet I have a reply, I have been trying to contact Earth Scientist, Reporters, Media and more for quite some time about meteorites and what I have discovered about them that no one is aware of. I have tried to pay reporters to look into my story for quite a while. I have found an easy way to tell if there was ever life on other planets that no one is aware of. I can show you how to see if there was ever life on another planet and even what that life looked like. I have been doing research for quite some time now and with quite a lot other information as well. I can show people around the world how to get a lot of information from meteorites that no one has ever known. This is but a fraction of my claims and the rest of the story is MUCH BIGGER THAN THIS.I challenge Beccy Tanner or scientist, Media/Newspapers, Archaeologist and more to look into my claims. By the way I have quite a few meteorites from my years of private research.
Thanks.

I am Jeanne Christensen from Haviland, Kansas. My son is the mayor of Haviland. We are planning a meteorite festivile for July 8th (or close to that day) and I am trying to contact people who might be interested. We want to contact the Wichita group also. Steve Arnold is bringing the ‘big one’ back for the occasion. It will be in Dallas/Fort Worth Museum until that time. Incidently he just found a 340 pounder the day before yesterda.
