It’s Albert Einstein’s 127th birthday! He looks good for that age.
The centenary of his famous scientific revolution last year was the focus of a huge worldwide celebration. But hey, that doesn’t mean we have to wait another 100 to truly appreciate what he did.
Among other things, he opened our eyes to a new world, where matter and energy are related, the speed of light is the speed limit of the known Universe, and proving to us that the space around us and the time we experience are intertwined physical entities, as real as the chair you’re sitting in. He became the first rock star scientist, a celebrity, whose very name became a noun for genius. It’s a status that has only grown in the 51 years since his death.
Read about Einstein the person, and his legacy. We’re continuing to test his theories and equations in the real world.
Upon reflecting about how his work led the way to the development of the atomic bomb, Einstein said:
If I had only known, I would have been a locksmith.
