NASA may have found the lost 1999 Mars Polar Lander in images from the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor. Sky and Telescope has a good summary.

In 2003, NASA awarded the University of Arizona the task of finishing MPL’s objectives. The Phoenix Mars Lander will carry instruments like those used on the Mars Polar Lander, as well as new instruments to the northern polar regions of Mars. Phoenix is scheduled to travel to the red planet in 2007. Exploration Place alumnus and University of Arizona graduate student Andrew Shaner works with the educational component of the mission.
