Even before the Cassini spacecraft arrived at Saturn, scientists thought that cloud-covered Titan might harbor lakes or seas of organic liquid. The Huygens lander that parachuted to the surface in January didn’t reveal anything like that directly, but there was plenty of evidence that something liquid had once poured over the surface of this huge frozen moon.
Now, an intriguing new image taken from Cassini of Titan’s south pole shows what may be a lake of liquid hydrocarbons. The possible lake seems to be pretty big - perhaps hundreds of miles long.
Looks like a great place for an extraterrestrial 4th of July cookout!
